1914
– "(...) admirer of Vicente de Carvalho, sends him sonnets asking for
his opinion. Having confirmed that the letter had been received and not
having obtained an answer, Mário makes a resolution to which he will
remain loyal: to give attention to all who write to him, in particular
the youngsters, the newcomers". (Mário’s Image, p. 21)
1917 – In
November he meets Oswald de Andrade, who takes the speech "O Brasil na
Guerra" to Jornal do Comércio in which Mário had saluted Elói
Chaves, conference speaker at the Conservatory.
Encounters Anita Malfatti,
and also the Modernism in her exhibition. Mário goes to see the work on
several occasions and becomes friends with the painter. It is here that
Mário, Oswald, Guilherme de Almeida, Ribeiro Couto and Di Cavalcanti all
meet together.
1919 – In
Mariana, he visits the symbolist poet Alphonsus de Guimaraens, whom he
greatly admires.
1920 –
Forms the São Paulo "avanguardistas" with Oswald de Andrade, Menotti del
Picchia, Guilherme and Tácito de Almeida, Rubens Borba de Moraes and Di
Cavalcanti.
Frequents Brecheret’s
studio and relates with Haarberg.
1921 –
Travels to Rio de Janeiro to make contact with modernists; meets Manuel
Bandeira.
Makes a reading of
Paulicéia Desvairada
at the home of Ronald de Carvalho.
1922 –
Begins correspondence with Manuel Bandeira.
With the return of Tarsila
do Amaral from Europe he forms, with her, Anita Malfatti, Oswald de
Andrade and Menotti del Picchia, the "Grupo dos Cinco".
1923 –
Through Oswald de Andrade and Sérgio Milliet, who had gone to Paris,
Mário enters into contact with Blaise Cendrans, Ivan Goll and Marinetti,
exchanging books and inscriptions.
1924 –
Gets to know young writers from Minas Gerais who are linked to
modernism, amongst them Carlos Drummond de Andrade with whom he begins a
long series of correspondences.
Begins correspondence with
the writer from Rio Grande do Norte, Luis da Câmara Cascudo.
1927 – In
Natal, he meets Luis da Câmara Cascudo and other writers and artists
from the Northeast, linked to Modernism.
1929 – An
extract of the letter to Sérgio Milliet (June of 1929) about the
difficulty of publishing in Brazil: "Life in Brazil is made of the
comradeship of presence".
1932 –
Beginning of the correspondence with Oneida Alvarenga.
1939 –
Regularly attends the group of young writers: Murilo Miranda, Carlos
Lacerda and Moacir Werneck de Castro of the Revista Acadêmica.
